Mansfield Swim Teams Sweep Foxboro

Both Hornet squads now 5-1 in the Hockomock League.

The Mansfield High girls’ swim team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 98-64 victory over Foxboro in a Hockomock League meet on Friday night at the Balfour Natatorium on the campus of Wheaton College in Norton.

Following a loss to rival North Attleboro on Tuesday, the Hornets responded with a win over the Warriors on Friday, improving their record to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the league.

The North Attleboro girls all but wrapped up the league title with a 94-74 victory over King Philip on Friday night at the Hockomock YMCA. The Rocketeers are first in the league with a 6-0 overall record and 5-0 league mark. Their win on Friday moved the Hornets into second with the Warriors now third at 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Junior Rose Aldo and freshman Abbie Grant both won a pair of events for Mansfield. Aldo won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.28 and captured the 500 freestyle in 5:41.62. Grant won both the 50 freestyle (27.78 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (1:01.63).

Sophomore Marissa Gabrilowitz won the 200 IM (2:25.22) and placed second in the 100 butterfly. Freshman Brooke Harrington captured the 100 breaststroke (1:16.47) and finished second in the 200 IM. Erin Civetti won the 100 backstroke (1:12.62).

Mansfield also captured all three relay events. Kaitlyn Cunniff, Harrington, Grant and Gabrilowitz teamed up to win the 200 medley relay in 2:07.4. Harrington, Cunniff, Amanda Iandoli and Aldo combined to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:56.28), while Grant, Civetti, Gabrilowitz and Aldo captured the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:05.7.

The Hornet girls have a week off from competition before they head to Barnstable for a non-league meet with the Red Raiders on Friday, January 21 at 5:30 p.m.

The Mansfield boys earned their second consecutive victory with an 80-56 verdict over Foxboro in a league meet on Friday night at the Balfour Natatorium.

The win improved the Hornets to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the league. A 91-77 win over North Attleboro on Friday night at the Hockomock YMCA moved King Philip into a first-place deadlock with Sharon. The Warriors are 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the league, while the Eagles have a 4-0 mark both overall and in the league. Mansfield is third with its 5-1 league mark, while the Rocketeers are fourth at 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Senior captain David Brown has had a terrific week and that continued on Friday night. He captured two events, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05. Brown also won the 100 butterfly, qualifying for the sectional meet with a time of 59.65 seconds. He was also a member of the victorious 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Hayden MacDonald won twice, capturing the 50 freestyle (25.0 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (57.87) events. Austin McGowan captured the 200 IM with a time of 2:20 and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay squads. He was also third in the 500 freestyle. Andrew Marcaccio won the 100 backstroke in 1:20.03.

Sophomore Matt Nugent finished second in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle events and was a member of the victorious 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Nate Michener placed second in the 200 IM, third in the 100 butterfly and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Paul Buonpane was third in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events and was a member of the victorious 200 freestyle relay squad.

The Hornet boys will also have a week off from competition before they head to Barnstable for a non-league meet on Friday, January 21 at 5:30 p.m.
