Mansfield Track Prepare for Hocks With Huge Wins Over Sharon

The Hornets picked up a pair of wins against the Sharon Eagles.

In a final tuneup before the Hockomock League Championship Meet, the Hornets trounced on the Sharon Eagles, winning both the boys' and girls' meet in the final competition before the league meet.

The boys finish the dual meet season with an overall record of 5-1 while the girls go into the league meet undefeated at 6-0.

Dominate in the boys’ 111-25 win, the Hornets were led by a strong showing by both sprinters and distance runners.

Dan Caughey dropped a personal best in the mile, winning the event in 4:28.9 while Val Madonna-Lendvai (4:49.5) came in second place. Michael Yang (5:02.2) completed the Mansfield sweep with a third place finish.

The Hornets got similar results in the 400 when Dean Jenssen (54.3), Tim White (54.6), and Colin Rumble (55.0) swept the Eagles while Jimmy Murphy (2:02.9), Andrew Simons (2:03), and Brendan Keady (2:04.2) did the same in the 800.

Jessen also picked up a second win in the triple jump with a leap of 38'10''

Matt Bukuras continued to improve in the javelin, winning with a personal best of 158’8”

Ollie Erickson went 2/2 with first place finishes in the shot put (47'6") and in the discus (128'1")

In a non-scoring event, the 4x800 put themselves into good position to score points in the postseason, running 8:10.6. The time puts the Hornets towards the top of the leaderboard in the relay in Division 2.

After showing promise in the 400 and the 800, sophomore Mikaila Amerantes continued to show talent across multiple events, this time dropping down to the 200. Leading a near sweep of the event, Amerantes won the event (26.3) while Maddie Oldow took second place (26.7).

Amerantes also tried her luck in the long jump, finishing with a mark of 15’10.5”

In the mile, Sami Carey (5:34.1) won the event for the Hornets, picking up a season’s best time and running under the Division 2 qualifying time for the first time this year.  Kelly McGee (5:36.1) of Mansfield came in second, just missing the state standard by a little over a second.

In the sprints, Caitlin Finnerty (13.2) won the 100 and Ashley Bjorkman (62.5) took the 400.

The Hornets are off until May 19 when they compete at the Hockomock League Track and Field Championship Meet at North Attleboro High School.
