Strong Performances Lead Mansfield Track Past KP

The Hornets won the girls' meet 98-38 and the boys' meet 90-46.

After losing to North Attleboro by only four points in the boys’ meet and winning by 10 in the girls’ meet last week, things were back to status quo against King Philip. Earning a pair of blowouts against the Warriors, the Hornets won the girls’ meet 98-38 and the boys’ meet 90-46.

The boys’ improve to 3-1 and the girls remain undefeated at 4-0.

Despite Val Madonna-Lendvai’s (4:32.7) best efforts in the mile, KP’s Owen Gonsar took the event, winning in 4:28.6. With 600 meters to go, Madonna-Lendvai took the lead and appeared to have control of the race until Gonsar was able to regain the lead and get separation with about 250 meters left in the race.

The Warriors’ only other bright spot in the boys’ meet came from Matt Bowers who went a perfect 4/4 on the day. The KP multi-eventer picked up wins in the 100 (11.3), 200 (22.4), long jump (21-9), and triple jump (152-4).

Matt Baldasare had a solid day for the Hornets winning the 400 (51.9) and taking second in the 200 (22.7).

Miguel Perez continued to improve in the hurdles with personal bests in the 400 hurdles (60.4) and 110 hurdles (15.7).

In the javelin, the Hornets were led by winner John Lawlor (152-4) and Matt Bukuras (149-5). The throws represented huge personal bests by both athletes with Lawlor throwing about 17 feet further than his previous best and Bukuras improving by about nine feet.

Oliver Erickson’s personal best throw of 130-8 in the discus was good enough to get the win for the Hornets. Omar Mond picked up a third place finish.

Lindsay Goulet (2:22.4) picked a win in the 800 in thrilling fashion, coming back within the final 100 meters, Goulet took advantage of a tumble by KP’s Olivia Ware to pick up a victory at the finish line.

The Hornets continued to beat KP at the line during the meet. In the 100, Lauren Waters (13.1) earned a Mansfield win, crossing the finish line .1 seconds faster than KP’s Brianna Abbott. Kelsey Ferreira (16.5) picked up a win in the 100 hurdles, beating her teammate Sabrina Pray and KP's Hannah McNeel by .1 seconds.

Sammi Carey however, coasted to victory in the 2-mile (11:48.2), picking up a 37 second win in the event.

Long sprinter Mikaila Amerantes continued to drop time in the 400, picking up a win with a personal record of 58.9. Ameramtes later joined Julia Jones, Rachel Stier, and Ashley Bjorkman to win the 4x400 (4:11.9)

For King Philip, Andrea Olsen easily went 2/2 with wins in the shot put (37-2) and the discus (87-7). 

The Hornets will travel to Taunton for their final Kelley-Rex dual meet of the season. The girls can win the division title with a win and the boys’ can earn a share of the Kelley-Rex title with a win and a KP win over North Attleboro.
