A Jump Start at Feehan’s Summer Academy

Feehan's Summer Academy gets a head start on the 2012-2013 school year.

Bishop Feehan High School recently held its annual two-week long Summer Academic Academy for incoming freshmen.   Over a hundred students chose to participate and enjoyed many opportunities for “learning the ropes” of a new campus including participating in group activities to enhance social interaction, a review of math and English skills, and “survival” skills like how to take notes, how to use the library, how to stay motivated, and how to avoid discipline problems. “The Summer Academic Academy has been a great success each year. Whether the kids realize it or not, it gives them the confidence to start the year off on the right foot and helps to eliminate the first-day-of-school jitters,” commented Ann Perry, Vice President of Academic …

Feehan Students Take on "Crime and Punishment"

Students immerse themselves in Dostoyevsky classic.

Recently, Bishop Feehan High School’s Advance Placement Literature and Composition students immersed themselves in the characters in the novel Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky by participating in a “mock” trial. “It is a wonderful class project,” said Jeffrey Day, Chair of Feehan’s English department and teacher of this class, “and a true authentic assessment opportunity -- because the students enjoy the dramatic presentation while becoming more intimately involved with the text than they ever would just studying for a test over it.”

Bishop Feehan Students Collect School Supplies for Those in Need

Bishop Feehan High School students joined together to collect school supplies for families in need.

Incoming freshmen at Bishop Feehan High School spent two weeks of their summer in the school's optional Summer Academic Academy, where they learned about service to others.  The 140 students in each of the six classrooms participated in St. Vincent de Paul’s School Supplies Drive by collecting and filling a large crate to capacity. “I want them to give for giving’s sake,” said Principal Bill Runey of the voluntary drive. The wide variety of school supplies will be distributed by the local St. Vincent de Paul Society to families in need. Not only did students learn the layout of the campus and receive classroom experience, they learned how their community service will impact other families.

Local Catholic Schools in the Area Keeping Enrollment Up

Despite the economy, private institutions are thriving.

Despite the downturn in the economy, local Catholic schools have still been filling enrollment relatively well. Several in the area have stated that they have maxed out their enrollment, and are also filling up admissions waiting lists. Bishop Feehan High School Director of Admissions Lynn Gale said the school’s enrollment is maxed out at over 1,000 students, with many on waiting lists for this Attleboro school. “When the economy dropped a few years ago, we thought we were going to see a drop in admissions, but in fact it was quite the opposite,” she said. “We haven’t seen a decrease in [enrollment] numbers. We have people calling every day about admission.” She attributes the success of the school to the level of excellence in the …
