Mansfield Selectmen Talk Security, Alcohol at the Comcast Center

Mansfield officials discuss drugs and alcohol along with security at the Comcast Center in the wake of recent deaths. Tonight, System of a Down will be performing at the venue.

Mansfield selectmen had a heated discussion Wednesday night on security measures and medical issues at the Comcast Center in the wake of two deaths,  an attempted rape charge and other violence. Tonight's concert will feature heavy metal band, System of a Down. Selectmen talked with many law enforcement officials to try to find an effective way to help curtail drug use and underage alcohol consumption and overuse. “A lot has been said recently about the issues from the concerts we’ve had,” Mansfield fire chief Neal Boldrighini said. “We’re not here to point fingers. The behavior that has prompted all this media attention is an epidemic that is seen at all venues.” Both the fire and police chiefs agreed that the problem lies in the crowds…

One of the reasons, although not obviously the only one, for the excessive alcohol abuse is that because of the outrageously out of sight prices for alcohol at the venue, most concert goers tend to drink up fast before even getting to or getting into the concert. This acerbates the problem in my mind. Also drug sniffing dogs do little to deter the type of drugs that caused the recent problems …   more ›

Drug-Sniffing Dogs at the Comcast Center?

Selectmen may take measures such as drug-sniffing dogs to combat the issues at the Comcast Center.

Last summer saw a deviation from the usual series of noise complaints and traffic snarls, with a savage beating of a single teenager by a group of Mansfield youths, and an alleged rape occurring in a parked bus. Selectmen have been particularly concerned …

Citizens are tired of hearing the BOS cry about the Comcast Center. The town should be making big bucks from that place, if not then don't renew the license. What kind of traffic snarl will result in the searching of every single automobile?   more ›

No Answers for Underage Drinking

Mansfield Selectmen probed into the root of the problem of underage drinking at the Comcast Center.

Although Comcast officials, Mansfield public safety staff, and selectmen were universally frustrated and alarmed over the public brawl at the Tim McGraw country western concert in July that resulted in serious injury for a Westwood teen, nobody had answers about how to prevent the drinking that caused it. But they praised the quick actions of the Comcast Center security team, and the emergency medical personnel on duty that night, saying without such immediate attention the young man could well have died. Comcast general manager Bruce Montgomery and his security and medical services heads, Bill Shinklin and David Piantedosi, answered questions from Selectmen Wednesday, as did Mansfield Chief of Police Arthur O'Neill. And while they were …
