Mansfield boys' basketball beats Belmont in Roundball Classic

The Mansfield Hornets wrapped up their regular season with a comfortable 67-49 victory over Belmont.

At times in the first half the Mansfield boys' basketball team played defense like last year's sectional champions. The Hornets went on a 28-4 run to finish off the first half and then held on easily in the final two quarters to win the Roundball Classic 67-49 over visiting Belmont Wednesday night. Mansfield took a 19-17 lead after the first quarter on a buzzer-beating three by sophomore Michael Hershman. The second quarter was dominated by the Hornets, as they outscored the Maruaders 23-4. Hershman, who finished with 17 points, had 13 by the end of the first half. Coach Mike Vaughan was impressed by the intensity his team showed on the defenseive end in the second quarter. Mansfield Girls' Basketball Team Wins Roundball Classic

The Mansfield Lady Hornets held on for a 41-37 victory over Dartmouth in the finals of the tournament that they hosted.

  The Mansfield High girls' basketball team relied on their defensive effort to hold on for a 41-37 victory over a tough Dartmouth Indians team in the finals of the Mansfield Roundball Classic Wednesday night. Kaitlyn McCarthy had a strong first half, scoring all 10 of her points in the first two quarters and Michaela Bowes had 10 points in the second half, of her team-high 13, to give the Hornets just enough offense for the win. Dartmouth jumped out to an early 7-2 lead as Mansfield needed five minutes to score their first points of the game. From there, the Hornets would finish the half on a 15-6 run, taking a 17-13 lead into the break. Coach Mike Redding recognized how important McCarthy was to the  Hornets in the first half.
