Air Quality Alert Issued

Poor Air Quality Predicted in Southern and Coastal New England for Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Unhealthy air quality is predicted for southern coastal Connecticut, all of Rhode Island, the south coast of Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands, and coastal New Hampshire on Wednesday due to ground-level ozone. Poor air quality is likely to continue into Thursday. “We are expecting Wednesday to be an unhealthy air quality day in parts of southern and coastal New England,” said Curt Spalding, Administrator of EPA’s New England office.  “To protect your health, New Englanders should pay close attention to air quality warnings, limit their strenuous outdoor activity on air quality alert days, and help take steps to reduce emissions when air quality is unhealthy.” In 2008, EPA strengthened the ozone air quality health standard …

Town will Replace Flagpole

Lead paint issues nix refurbishing project.

The decision has been made - if the peeling flagpole on the South Common is to undergo a beautification process, it will have to be completely replaced. Town Manager William Ross said Wednesday that he, Selectman Jess Aptowitz, and Veteran's Agent John Hogan have determined the proposal to strip and repaint the 110-foot pole presents problems of its own.  "We had discussed it with the Department of Environmental Protection and the Board of Health, and (the process) does not provide adequate lead paint protection," he said. "(Health agent) Scott Leite feels the same way." The town should try to replace the North Common flag pole at the same time. They might save some money in the long run by combining the two projects.   more ›
