Congressman Markey leads Gabriel Gomez by 17 points.
A new Suffolk University/7NEWS (WHDH) poll shows a strong lead for Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey over Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in the race for the U.S. Senate special election. The poll of 500 likely voters has Markey at 52 percent and Gomez at 35 percent. Eleven percent of voters in the poll were undecided. A third-party candidate, Richard Heos of the Twelve Visions Party, got 1 percent and another 1 percent refused to respond. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, said along with the announcement of the poll that Markey has "a large lead over his Republican opponent who voters are unsure about." Stephen Lynch and Gabriel Gomez were the highest vote-getters in Mansfield
With the polls now closed, Mansfield voters preferred Democrat Congressman Stephen Lynch and Republican Gabriel Gomez in the special primary for the U.S. Senate. Unofficially, Lynch beat Markey 53.96%-46.04%, while Gomez's 40% was enough to beat Michael Sullivan's 31.47%. Third place Dan Winslow placed third with 28.38% of the vote. 1,916 residents came out to vote in the election which equals a turnout rate of 13.27% There were 1,236 voters for the Democratic primary and 680 for the Republican primary. With votes still being counted across the state, Mansfield will have to wait and see which candidates will move on to the general election in June. A look back at what happened over the past week in the U.S. Senate race.
It was a very busy week in the race for U.S. Senate. Things started to get heated as the candidates continue to race toward the April 30 primaries. We saw candidates lashing out at party backing, another facing an ethics complaint, new poll numbers, and more. Let’s start with the Democrats this week. Democratic candidates Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Edward Markey (D-Malden) will face off in a second debate Monday night in Lowell. If the news of the past week is any indication, it should make for an interesting back and forth between the candidates. Lynch took aim at his party leaders last week for supporting Markey. In the days leading up to the first Democratic U.S. Senate debate, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) has been called upon frequently to explain the vote he took against the health care reform bill in 2010. Wednesday night, Lynch and U.S. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden) went several rounds on the topic. They faced-off for 30 minutes at the Channel 5 studios in Needham following a contest among the three declared Republican candidates. After running twice for Congress, Sean Bielat is throwing his hat in the race for US Senate.
Norfolk now has two candidates running for US Senate. After losing two races for Congress, Norfolk's Sean Bleilat has opened up a federal campaign office to raise money to run for the US Senate, according to a report in the Boston Globe. Bielat lost to Barney Frank by 10 points in 2010 and then lost to Joe Kennedy III in November by 25 points. A major in the Marine Corps Reserves, Bielat works as an independent consultant. State Rep. With local Republicans still scrambling to find someone to run in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State, we do have some other contenders who have jumped into the fray. On Monday, Beverly Libertarian Daniel Fishman announced he would attempt to get on the ballot for the U.S. Senate special election. Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25.
