Ribbon Cutting at New Mansfield Animal Shelter

Members of the community share a very special day at the Mansfield Animal Shelter

A small crowd of people huddled together in the reception area of the brand new Mansfield Animal Shelter on a very chilly Saturday morning to celebrate a great achievement for the shelter and the town of Mansfield. Volunteers and supporters were eager to celebrate the long-awaited opening of the new shelter. It would have been impossible to hold an event of that size in the old shelter. There were so many people planning to attend, in fact, that they had to split it into two different ceremonies. Those in attendance included Selectman George Dentino, Police Chief Arthur O’Neill, shelter volunteers and large donors. “It’s been a long journey to get here to this day,” said Mansfield resident Lou Andrews to a very delighted crowd, “but we did…

Mansfield Without an Accountant Again

Stanbrook leaves after a year on the job.

Mansfield is on the hunt once more for a Town Accountant, with the recent announcement by John Stanbrook that he is leaving town for a better paying job in another community.  Stanbrook held the job one year, following Eric Hart, who held that office for only nine months before pulling out and returning to Rockland, where he had served before Mansfield. Town Manager William Ross, who just celebrated his own one-year anniversary in Mansfield, announced Stanbrook's departure Wednesday, January 19 and later said he and several selectmen had tried to convince the valuable and talented accountant to stay, to no avail.  Ross said Stanbrook's next job promises more pay and more responsibility, both of which he has been looking for.  But Ross also…

Mansfield Selectmen Weary of Liquor Violations

Town Council, Police, Selectmen and VFW attorney to continue hearings next week.

Selectmen Chairman Kevin Moran warned town restaurant and bar owners Wednesday, Jan 19, that the board is weary of coping with the recent group of alcohol license scofflaws.  His comments came at the end of a meeting featuring a lengthy and at times confusing license violation hearing, involving the Mansfield VFW Post 3264, and allegations of another possible violation by the town's newest restaurant, Sake, at the Mansfield Crossings Mall. These follow two previous discussions this winter with managers at the Village at Willow Crossings senior living center and Q'Doba's Mexican restaurant at Mansfield Crossings.  Selectmen traditionally receive and vote on license renewals at the end of the calendar year, including liquor licenses, common …

Taxpaying Non-Residents Gain Right to Use Green

Selectmen pass the sticky issue of stickers on to DPW, Town Clerk.

Some Mansfield property owners who live out of town may be able to use the town's compost area for yard waste this spring, and will be able to haul grass clippings, leaves, and brush up to Mansfield Green Recycling Center on East Street like any other resident.  Selectman George Dentino posed the suggestion to the board several weeks ago, saying owners of small residential properties in town, whether they be single family homes or duplex units, should be able to take advantage of the same composting services as any other taxpayer. Located opposite the highway barn on Route 106, "The Green," as it is called, offers a large open area where residents pile any yard waste that can break down into compost into large windrows that are kept in …

Rewards for Bright Ideas?

Selectmen contemplate rewarding citizens for money saving ideas for the town.

Need a little extra pocket money?  Residents and town employees might soon be rewarded for bright ideas that save Mansfield cash, so keeping tabs on the week-to-week operations of the town might actually pay off.  Selectmen unofficially kicked off the new budget preparation season Wednesday by outlining what they hope will be a more transparent process for townspeople, even as they predicted dire consequences as the state wrestles with a two billion dollar shortfall that will surely mean drastic cuts to cities and towns.        Board member Olivier Kozlowski, who has been working on the town Web site with the Information Technology Services Manager, Sacha Zlatkova, suggested the warrants signed every week that reflect purchases and …
