Mansfield Opens Community Garden in Conjunction with the Hock Y

Mansfield opens first community garden, where residents can grow their own fruits and vegetables during the summer and fall.

The Mansfield Community Garden held its grand opening on Tuesday, and now allows residents to come and plant their own vegetables during the season. “I really have to say, I’m thrilled with all the progress that has been made over here,” Kozlowski said. The garden will grow vegetables for residents, by either letting residents pick out a plot and grow themselves or by ordering vegetables from a plot week to week. Families can purchase a 10’ by 20 ‘ or 20’ by 20’ plot to grow fruits, vegetables, flowers or herd from June to October. Hock Y Outreach Campaign Kicks Off in Mansfield

Mansfield Holiday Inn hosts kick off breakfast for the Hockomock Area YMCA Annual Reach Out For Youth and Families Campaign Kick-off Breakfast.

The Hockomock Area YMCA’s Annual Reach Out For Youth and Families Campaign Kick-off Breakfast flourished Thursday morning at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield. Over 400 area business and community leaders came to show their appreciation, eat a big buffet breakfast and kicked off the 2012 Campaign. The event featured speakers of every walk of life, from YMCA personnel to contributors and beneficiaries of past programs. “This breakfast was my first introduction [to the YMCA outreach program],” chairman of the Hockomock Area YMCA Board of Directors Greg Spier. “Eighteen years ago… I was dressed in my blue jeans and construction cloths and I was a little overwhelmed. Sexual Abuse Prevention Training Sept. 26

Anthony Calcia will present sexual abuse prevention training for parents

Anthony Calcia, vice president for child protection and social responsibility at the Hockomock Area YMCA, invites parents, community leaders school personell and church officials to attend a child sexual abuse training session on Monday, Sept. 26. Two sessions, one at noon and one at 7 p.m., will be held at the Mansfield Town Hall from the organization Darkness to Light. Calcia said that statisically, one in four girls  and one in six boys are sexual abused before they become 18. "Unfortunately, child sexual abuse in our country is what I would call an epidemic situation," he said.
