A 5-1 win over North Attleboro means that the Hornets will face North Quincy in the sectional semifinals at a date and location to be determined.
The last time these two teams met the game finished in a tie, but on Saturday evening at Asiaf Arena in Brockton, the Mansfield High hockey team found their groove offensively and skated away with a 5-1 victory over their conference rivals, North Attleboro. Anytime two teams play three times in a season there is little that they do not know about each other. Instead of changing the Hornets' gameplan, head coach Rick Annastos simply told his team to keep playing the way that they have been. "I watched the game today (the 1-1 tie with North on Jan. 28) and I thought we out-played them then too," explained Annastos. "I told the kids you got to play the same game and we'll have a better result." The Hornets hadn't played in a week and there …

The Mansfield Hornets wrapped up their regular season with a comfortable 67-49 victory over Belmont.
At times in the first half the Mansfield boys' basketball team played defense like last year's sectional champions. The Hornets went on a 28-4 run to finish off the first half and then held on easily in the final two quarters to win the Roundball Classic 67-49 over visiting Belmont Wednesday night. Mansfield took a 19-17 lead after the first quarter on a buzzer-beating three by sophomore Michael Hershman. The second quarter was dominated by the Hornets, as they outscored the Maruaders 23-4. Hershman, who finished with 17 points, had 13 by the end of the first half. Coach Mike Vaughan was impressed by the intensity his team showed on the defenseive end in the second quarter. "I thought we did a real good job of keeping the ball in front of …

The Mansfield Lady Hornets held on for a 41-37 victory over Dartmouth in the finals of the tournament that they hosted.
The Mansfield High girls' basketball team relied on their defensive effort to hold on for a 41-37 victory over a tough Dartmouth Indians team in the finals of the Mansfield Roundball Classic Wednesday night. Kaitlyn McCarthy had a strong first half, scoring all 10 of her points in the first two quarters and Michaela Bowes had 10 points in the second half, of her team-high 13, to give the Hornets just enough offense for the win. Dartmouth jumped out to an early 7-2 lead as Mansfield needed five minutes to score their first points of the game. From there, the Hornets would finish the half on a 15-6 run, taking a 17-13 lead into the break. Coach Mike Redding recognized how important McCarthy was to the Hornets in the first half. "I thought…

The Tigers beat the Hornets, 4-2 Saturday.
The Oliver Ames hockey team won one for the Davenport Division Saturday afternoon at Foxborough Sports Center. The Tigers beat Kelly-Rex Division Mansfield, 4-2 in the Hockomock Crossver game. The win also created strong momentum for the 12-4-3 Tigers as they prepare for the State Tournament. "People were saying we get no respect," OA coach Jim Sullivan said. "Well, you don’t get respect unless you play well. If you lose to teams that you should have beaten it comes back to haunt you, so today was a good win" The Tigers came out firing in the first period. After Mansfield Captain Mike Blackman put the Hornets ahead at the 9:07 mark off an assist from fellow Captain Steve Folan, OA's Ryan McGrath answered with a goal 17 seconds later. …

Despite getting an early lead, Mansfield could not keep the momentum and lost 3-2
The game started well enough for Mansfield, with two goals in the first half and a good showing of defense. The Hornets did not give the Warriors many chances to strike in the first half, but it was not the case in the second half. "We fought back in the second half," said Foxborough head coach Pat Nash. "First half, I think we didn't play very well. They took it to us, played big and you've got to give them credit there." Danny Sarkis, the Mansfield team captain, scored both of the team's goals in the first half. But near the beginning of the second half, Foxborough began to strike back. "We outplayed them in the first half, they outplayed us in the second," Mansfield head coach Steve Sheridan. "It was a tale of two halves, they won one …

Team effort keeps team undefeated.
The undefeated Hornets broke open a tie game Tuesday, late in the second period, on their way to five unanswered goals and a 9-4 victory over Stoughton. “We continue to have problems in our defensive zone and we give our opponents added scoring opportunities and a team as good as Mansfield will take advantage of it,” said Stoughton coach Dan Mark. “We couldn’t move the puck out of our defensive zone, quick enough and we were outshot by a wide margin and it again cost us.” The defeat overshadowed a great individual effort by Stoughton sophomore Phil Falkof. Falkof scored all four Stoughton goals and is no longer high school hockey’s best kept secret. “We got off to a fast start, but we knew Stoughton will always come at you and never quit …

Michael Lofton's momentum changing dunk secures game against Oliver Ames.
Sometimes during a course of a basketball game, one play can entirely dictate the momentum going forward. Friday night at the Nixon Gymnasium, that one play came from Mansfield boys' basketball forward and senior co-captain Michael Lofton. With the game still relatively close in the first half, Lofton drove to the lane and forcefully dunked the ball – for 2 of his 17 points – and completed the three-point play after his free throw to put Mansfield ahead at the time, 28-20. Lofton’s play gave the Hornets a big energy boost for the remainder of the contest as Mansfield sailed to a 69-38 victory. “I think anytime you get a big time play from a big time player you put yourself in position to go on a little bit of a run,” said Mansfield head …
