Some of the biggest names in music take the stage at Madison Square Garden for the live 12-12-12 concert for Sandy relief. While thousands of people fill the arena, billions are watching live on a variety of screens worldwide. The concert is streaming live on television networks, movie theater screens and on the Internet, including right here on Patch. Preventing people from looting their neighbors' homes is part of the troopers' work in New Jersey.
New Jersey called; Massachusetts answered. The state of New Jersey asked for help with devastation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, requesting that nearby states send law enforcement officers to help keep peace and order in the hardest-hit areas of New Jersey. On Saturday, a detachment of 25 troopers from the Massachusetts State Police was selected and sent, reporting to Fort Dix to be sworn in as police officers. The Massachusetts State Police officers are working with Louisiana State Police and New Jersey State Police in areas including Brick, Ocean Park, Seaside Heights and Palisades Park in New Jersey. The Bristol County Fire Chiefs in cooperation with the Firefighters of Bristol County are conducting a drive to collect Relief supplies for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The following supplies will be collected until Sunday November 11, 2012. The collected supplies will be transported by Bristol County Firefighters to fire stations in the affected areas. Massachusetts bracing for another storm with effects from Sandy still being felt.
First Sandy, and now a Nor'easter. Massachusetts is in store for more wild weather this week as a Nor'easter heads our way today and into Thursday morning. According to WHDH meteorologist Chris Lambert, the area can expect to see the storm hit between 2 and 4 p.m. "What I've noticed over the last few model runs is a track farther east," Lambert said on his blog."If that's the case, our wind stays more out of the NNE rather than going east, and that means colder weather gets locked in. It also means that dew point levels stay low. American Red Cross volunteers from Eastern Massachusetts, after working in our communities during Hurricane Sandy, are accepting deployments to states devastated by the superstorm. Paul Hoy of Mansfield, who will be driving an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) down to New York, has deployed to the New York region. An ERV is used to deliver the important life-saving goods Red Cross donors have paid for: Food, blankets, water, snacks… and of course, volunteers themselves. The American Red Cross has mobilized more than 2,000 disaster workers from all over the country who have served more than 25,000 meals and snacks so far. As crews continue to restore power and clean up damage left in Hurricane Sandy's wake across the Commonwealth, the storm may have inadvertently placed a bit of a speed bump in Halloween for some this year. Uprooted trees, downed wires, snapped tree limbs and other damage lined the roads of neighborhoods throughout much of the state, though Massachusetts was able to avoid much of the destruction and devastation seen in New York, New Jersey and elsewhere along the East Coast this week. But even one downed wire or hanging limb can be enough to cause safety issues . . . especially for youngsters looking to hit the roads on Halloween night for trick-or-treating. Three Mansfield firefighters, along with many in the state, have been deployed to help out in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Mansfield Firefighters, members of Federal Urban Search and Rescue section of the Federal Emergency Management Association, are working now in storm areas of the country affected by Sandy. The three firefighters have been members of the division for a long time, accoding to Mansfield fire chief Neal Boldrighini said. “They were out in Irene, they were out in the tornadoes and they were there at (September 11),” he said.
