Strange, But Interesting Presidential Tales

Presidents of the United States have spun interesting tales.

Did you know there was a president who couldn't stand the sight of blood? Or that one leader got stuck in the White House tub? Or who was the first president to use a nickname when he was sworn in as president, or the president who wasn't sworn in? How much do we really know about the 44 presidents of the United States, which is really 43 presidents? Grover Cleveland is actually the 22nd and 24th presidents after sitting out as No. 23 in favor of Benjamin Harrison. Sure when Presidents' Day comes around we hear about the biggies, Washington, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, Kennedy and Reagan, but what about the other guys? A new book detailing President Obama's first year in office and a great HBO miniseries on the life of John Adams are in the stacks at the library.

President’s Day is nearly upon us. This week a book and a DVD set on two of the men who have held the prestigious office are among the new and noteworthy presidential materials in the collection at the Mansfield Public Library. The Promise: President Obama, Year One: Newsweek columnist and Harvard graduate Jonathan Alter has considerable access to President Obama’s administration and he took advantage of such by penning a book on Obama’s first year in office. In the book the reader gets a detailed account of just how methodically the Obama White House is run, and how starkly this contrasts to the knee-jerk reactive Bush administration.
