Earlier today, Mansfield basketball captains Greg Romanko and Zach Wisnieski attended the MIAA Breakfast of Champions at the DCU Center in Worcester along with captains from the other teams competing at the state championships. After breakfast and a tour of the arena, the captains talked with Patch about playing at the DCU Center and competing for a state title.

Mansfield Boys Basketball Lose to Franklin 60-42

The Mansfield boys' basketball team lost to Franklin on Tuesday, 60-42, in their last regular game of the season. Mansfield started off the game strong in the first period, but slowly lost momentum to Franklin. Mansfield was up for the first half of the first period, but got stuck at 11 while Franklin pulled ahead to 17. "I think their shooting kind of slowed down the game a bit," Mansfield head coach Michael Vaughan said. "Our offensive style is fast, and other teams are sitting on us a little bit." Mansfield started the second period with two baskets, but Franklin answered each and pulled ahead again to bring the score to 23-16. The half ended 27-20 with Franklin in the lead. Late Second Half Run Sparks OA Girls' Basketball Past Mansfield

  For over 20 minutes, the Oliver Ames girls’ basketball team looked like they would be in for a grind against Mansfield Friday night at the Nixon Gymnasium. The two teams traded buckets throughout that span where the lead changed hands nine times. Towards the end of the third quarter, however, the Lady Tigers took the lead for good during a 20-3 second half run and came away with a 54-40 victory over the Hornets. With the game tied at 37, guards Kate Holleran and Asia Mitchell put OA ahead for good with two clutch three pointer’s at the end of the third quarter. “That run really got the energy going and got us moving in the right direction,” said OA coach Elaine Clement Holbrook, whose team is now 7-1. “Those three’s at the end of the …

Mansfield’s Fourth Quarter Rally Stings Stoughton High Boys’ Basketball

The Hornets outscored Stoughton 28-8 in the final quarter, turning a 58-45 deficit into a 73-66 win.

The Mansfield High boys’ basketball team used a fourth quarter come-from-behind rally, outscoring Stoughton 28-8 in the final frame, to hand the Black Knights their first loss of the season, 73-66, Tuesday in Stoughton. Mansfield improves to 5-3 on the season and extends their Hockomock League winning streak to 26 games. Stoughton, meanwhile, falls to 6-1.   Senior captain Brian Hershman led the way for the Hornets with 18 points, while freshman Brendan Hill had 16 points off the bench. “One possession at a time,” Mansfield head coach Mike Vaughn said of his team’s fourth quarter comeback. “I told my guys ‘we aren’t going down without a fight.’ [Stoughton’s] a great team. Mansfield Boys' Basketball Dominates Canton on Home Court

The Mansfield boys' basketball team beat the Bulldogs, 73-56, Friday night at home.

Mansfield boys basketball team trounced Canton, 73-56, at home Friday. Despite a strong showing in the first quarter, Canton fell behind later, losing by 20 points during most of the game. “Canton played hard with a lot of energy,” said Mansfield head coach Michael Vaughan. In the first quarter, Mansfield had a shakey start, scoring only twice in the first two minutes. At the five minute mark, they started picking up steam, and eventually ended the period ahead, 17-12. The Hornets turned up the pace, scoring another 22 points during the period, while Canton could only put in 12 points, bringing the score to 39-24 at halftime. Mansfield Beats North Attleboro 57-37 in Home Opener

Mansfield dominated North Attleboro on Friday 57-37 in their home opener. Hornet guard Michael Hershman lead the Mansfield scoring with 11 points, followed very closely by forward Brendan Hill and team co captain Brian Hershman. Nipping at their heels was guard Ryan DeAndrade andforward Gregory Romanko with nine points each, followed by co captain Terence O'Mara with six points and Sean Higgins with two. The Hornets started off strong, scoring first and held a steady lead during much of the first period.
