Mansfield could lose federal funding if state requirements are not met concerning high needs students.
The Mansfield School Committee discussed on Tuesday the fiscal year 2013 budget season and the problems that unfounded state mandates put on the district. “In terms of the next year’s budget, we’re getting ready to begin,” Mansfield school’s director of finances Edward Vozzella said. “In the week after next, we’ll send out the budget templates and begin in earnst.” The unfunded mandates, superintendent Brenda Hodges said, focuses on high-needs groups of students. “Those are the students that need to be small [class size] numbers and are very staff intensive,” she said. “We’re going to need to take that into consideration.” She said that risking these student groups could cost the town and the district large amounts of funding. “The state …

The Mansfield School Committee voted 4-1, with Chair Michael Trowbridge voting against, to now include Rosh Hashanah as a day off holiday in the 2012-2013 school calendar (Sept. 17 2012), after adjustments are made to account for the lost day in the schedule. The school committee discussed the continuing debate on the school budget deficit. The idea was floated to cut personnel, but not continued on. The committee heard an update on the Strategic Town Plan, which will be gone over in further detail on Saturday at the charrette. The committee heard an update from Keira O’Neil, a member of the policy handbook subcommittee, concerning necessary changes to the Mansfield schools’ policy handbook. A look at the 2012-2013 school year budget plans for Qualters Middle School.
Qualters Middle School has requested an additional $45,000 for a Response to Intervention Specialist for MCAS and RTI support for all QMS students for their budget this year after level services from the School Committee. The position made it to the top ten budget requests for the fiscal year 2012-2013 budget, as put together by all the schools’ administrators. Response to intervention is a term to describe the way in which a school helps improve MCAS scores for students who are struggling in certain areas. Providing adequate RTI services is currently a goal in the school’s strategic improvement plan. “We are really struggling with this aspect of RTI [goals],” said QMS principal Zeffro Gianetti. “We have a support team that’s up and …
