Census to be Sent Out in Mansfield for Jan. 2013

Jan. 2013 will have the census sent out.

The following is from the office of the Mansfield Town Clerk. The Annual Census will be sent out at the beginning of January and are due back no later than Jan. 31.  At this time, I would like to remind residents the importance of returning the census because the information gathered through the census is used in obtaining an accurate town population and is used in obtaining grants for the town of Mansfield for things such as schools and road improvements. In addition, in an emergency when seconds count, the census is just another way of helping our public safety personnel do their job. Finally, as many residents who came to vote this past November can attest, when the census is not answered, the Town Clerk’s office is mandated to …

Mansfield Town Clerk: Election a Great Example of Town's Ability to Manage

Mansfield town clerk Marianne Staples said election was a success despite record voter turnout and machine problems.

Recently appointed Mansfield town clerk Marianne Staples said this year’s national election in Mansfield was extremely successful, despite numerous obstacles. This year saw a total breakdown of one voting machine as well as glitches in two others. “It was a marathon,” she said. “But I wasn’t alone. There’s a lot of people in between. There was the school helping to set up, the DPW helping to set up and the police doing detail and traffic… and my support staff is second to none.” Staples said that there is a backup machine for just such occasions and the switch was made in time not to affect voter numbers. “We had a mild glitch in one of the other machines as well,” she said. “For the most part [voters] were very patient, even when the …

After 14 years as Mansfield's town clerk, Christian is retiring and handing the reigns off to a new person.

Mansfield’s Town Clerk Helen Christian announced this year that she is retiring. Amid the news, she said says she looks back fondly at her time in Mansfield, and wouldn’t have had it any other way. “It’s been a privilege to serve as the town clerk in Mansfield,” she said.  “I love the job, I’ve lived here for 40 years, [my family’s] roots are here and I plan to stay here for the rest of my life. Christian has been at her position for over 14 years, but that was never a part of her plan. Christian started as an office clerk in the Mansfield Town Hall to help pay for her sons’ college tuition. She said that at the time of her first son’s birth, she wanted to focus on raising a family, and raised three sons before starting years later in …

Mansfield Looking to Fill Key Town Employee Positions

Mansfield interviewing town clerk candidates and looking into a replacement for retiring Police Chief Arthur O'Neil.

The town of Mansfield is seeing retirements in two key positions in town. Mansfield Town Clerk Helen Christian announced her retirement months ago and Police Chief Arthur O'Neil also recently said he is looking to retire. Town Manager William Ross said last week that he will be talking to town clerk candidates this week and narrowing down the choices. He said a great attention to details is a must for the position. "[Town Clerks] are very intense about making sure the rules are followed in elections and other town issues," he said. "They have to be. If [the clerk] doesn’t handle the rules properly, for example a marriage could void. You have to follow the laws on that and do it right." Ross said that for the Police Chief position, the town…
