Mansfield Snow Ban in Effect Dec. 1

Snow emergency parking bans going into effect Dec. 1.

Effective Dec. 1, Mansfield's winter parking ban will go into effect. There will be no parking allowed in the Mansfield Downtown Business District during a snow emergency. A snow emergency will be announced by the town when such a case arises. Just because it's snowing does not necessarily mean a snow emergency. Check back with Mansfield Patch for more information when the situation arises. Downtown business district is defined as: Rumford Avenue to Hope Street; South Common to North Common.   In case of snow emergency, all vehicles not removed from roadways will be subject to ticketing and towing.  Any vehicles parked on any street or highway within the town limits during snow removal shall be towed at the expense of the owner.

Mansfield DPW: Unexpected Snow Causes Slow Response

DPW say no warning on the snowfall was the main reason for a slow response in salting, sanding and plowing.

Mansfield was slow to respond in the surprise snowstorm that came down on Wednesday. Mansfield Department of Public Works director Lee Azinheira said that because there was no snow expected response has been slow. “If the weathermen would give us better info we would be better prepared,” he said. “The response was not quick for that reason." He went on to say that contractors had no drivers readily available as well, further hindering plowing and sanding efforts.  “We weren’t supposed to get snow in Mansfield and the contractors were not ready,” he said. Azinheira also said that key roads in Mansfield, like Route 140 and Route 106, were covered first before other areas.

Mansfield Electric: Ready for Snowstorms

Mansfield Electric's Gary Babin says preparations for snow this year are already underway.

Gary Babin, director of the Mansfield Municipal Electric Department, said that winter storm preparation is the next step in the department’s plans. "We feel like we have a pretty good handle on how to approach storms,” he said. “The logistical preparation is the same… Tree trimming is all down.” Babin said that personnel is the major difference between wind-based storms and snow storms. Snow storms, by nature, leave less light to work in and are more taxing on people doing repairs, and therefore take more time (both in work and in preparation). “The amount of time we put in consecutively is pretty similiar, but some of the conditions are different,” he said. “The snow gives us a lot less daylight to work. That makes a big difference. As a …
