Mansfield Boys Basketball Victorious

Stoughton falls 75-59 to Mansfield (18-2 and 13-0 in the Hockomock) Thursday night in the first ever Hockomock League Classic Cup Championship.

In the end, no team could come close to matching the skill and size of the Mansfield High boys’ basketball squad. The Hornets (18-2) finished the season a perfect 13-0 in the Hockomock League and beat the Stoughton boys, 75-59, Thursday night at North Attleboro High School on their way to the first ever Hockomock League Classic Cup Championship. “We played great,” Mansfield head coach Mike Vaughn said. “I think we’ve played tremendous all year. We’re a team that’s made up of a lot of quality players and tonight was no different. I thought we shot the ball well.” Stoughton falls to 10-8 with the loss. Mansfield sank 16 three pointers throughout the game, nine of which came from junior Brian Hershman, who finished with 28 points. “He shot …

Mansfield Boys Basketball Defeats Franklin

Hornets hold off Panthers with a 71-66 victory.

Victories in both basketball and hockey for Mansfield boys teams Sunday, Jan. 30, put the Hornets in sole possession of first place in the Hockomock League’s Large School Division in each sport. The Hornet boys’ basketball team took a big lead against the Panthers before holding off their rivals, 71-66, at a packed James Albertini Memorial Gymnasium. In an ironic twist of fate, former Hornet star, Panther coach Dean O'Connor, found  his team head-to-head against a pair of career-high performances from senior forward Chris Johnson and junior forward Terry O’Mara. Senior captain and point guard Michael Lofton gave a stellar performance throughout the game, including  a triple-double on the night with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. …

Mansfield Boys Basketball Battle Tested

Hornets emerge from difficult week to face Brockton tonight.

During a rugged three-game stretch last week, Mansfield High boys' basketball coach Mike Vaughan didn't necessarily learn anything new about his team, but did have some things confirmed about what the Hornets excel at and what areas they need to improve in. With  inclement weather  condensing the talent-laden Super Stop and Shop Classic at Chelsea High School from a three-day to a two-day contest, Mansfield tested their strength with three excellent teams in the Class A Division as New Bedford, St. John's Prep and New Mission would all pose different types of problems for the locals. New Bedford, in particular, began the season 3-0 and ranked seventh in the Boston Herald's Division I Eastern Massachusetts Preseason Boys' Poll. New Mission …

Mansfield Boys Basketball Holds Off Cardinal Spellman

Hornets finish tough stretch by winning two of three games.

The Mansfield High boys' basketball team completed a tough three-day stretch with a hard-fought 45-40 victory over Cardinal Spellman in a non-league game on Thursday night at the James Albertini Memorial Gymnasium. It promised to be a challenging week for the Hornets even before the snowstorm hit. Scheduled to compete in the Super Stop and Shop Classic at Chelsea High on Monday and Tuesday, the inclement weather moved the tournament games to Tuesday and Wednesday. Mansfield opened the Holiday Classic with a difficult 66-62 setback to New Bedford in the Class A Division semifinals on Tuesday night. The Hornets then bounced back to defeat a talented New Mission team 61-54 in the consolation game on Wednesday. After the mixed results of the …

Mansfield Boys Basketball Set To Battle New Bedford

Addition of Tavares makes Whalers difficult team to deal with.

After winning a pair of hard-fought games in the Hockomock League Large School Division to open the season, the Mansfield High boys' basketball team will begin a difficult week by traveling to Chelsea to face a talented New Bedford team  tonight in the opening round of the Super Stop and Shop Holiday Classic. Mansfield opened the season with a 57-50 victory in North Attleboro. The Hornets followed that up with a 66-62 victory over King Philip Dec. 26 at the James Albertini Gymnasium. The two wins allowed Mansfield to begin the campaign at 2-0 overall, but more importantly the team won its first two games in what will be a difficult Large School Division, featuring the likes of Attleboro, North Attleboro, Franklin and King Philip. Hornet …
