During the high school Super Bowl era, the Mansfield High football team has won five titles.

In Mike Redding's long, successful tenure as the Mansfield High head football coach, the Hornets have been one of the top programs in the state. Monday, the Hornets start preseason practice for the 2012 season, attempting to add another Super Bowl title. As the 2012 team starts the hard work for a new year, we're asking what was the best Super Bowl winning team. Let's us know what you think is the best of the super bunch in the comment section. 1992-The first Super Bowl winning team went 11-0 beating Winthrop for the title, winning 20-12 at Winthrop. 1994, no question. I graduated in 04 and I still would say 94. The chemistry between Vallett and Bacon was unmatched by any other high school WR&QB, not to mention all the other players no mentioned like Mike Lundell who complemented Bacon very well. Vinny Hollins who was an explosive runner who could take it to the house at any moment. One of the more stout D-lines in MHS history... I could go …   more ›

Mansfield Holds on to Beat Needham, 36-30.

The Hornets defense smothered Rockets quarterback Drew Burnett during the closing minutes to secure an important non-conference victory.

With less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the Needham Rockets trailing by six points, senior quarterback Drew Burnett converted on two fourth downs on the team’s final offensive series, but failed to convert the game-tying touchdown, which handed the victory to the Mansfield Hornets. “[This was] two very good offensive football teams and both quarterbacks can throw,” said Mansfield head coach Mike Redding. “This was a great non-league game for both teams. I think it’ll help both of us in our league play, and I hope they win the Bay State [Conference] and this was a great night of football [overall].”  “This is a very emotional win,” said Mansfield’s quarterback George Busharis. “We pushed it out, our team played …

MHS Super Bowl Champs Honored

Awards and Senior Farewell Ceremony held to celebrate season.

Last week, Mansfield High School head football coach Mike Redding brought together his 2010 Super Bowl Champions one last time and for good reason. Players, coaches, family and friends spent a few special hours reliving the highlights of their season and celebrating both individual and team accomplishments. Varsity players were awarded their Championship Super Bowl rings emblazoned with the team motto: "Never Surrender," that came alive and led them to victory at Gillette Stadium for their last game. In addition to championship jackets which had previously been distributed, team plaques and award booklets were presented to each varsity player as mementos of a season well-played. Seniors received T-shirts donated by Hudl. Jackets were …

Hornet Girls Undefeated in Bout with Bombardiers

Mansfield defeats Attlboro 56-43.

There were few surprises in Attleboro Friday night as the Mansfield Hornets continued their dominance in the Hockomock League with an impressive showing against the Attleboro Blue Bombardiers.  Though Attleboro never gave up, in the end the lead that Mansfield established early was just too high for the Blue Bombardiers to overcome.  Mansfield opened strong and never looked back, winning by a final score of 56 to 43 to remain undefeated for the season. The key to the victory was Mansfield’s defensive play in the first half, particularly the second quarter.  After leading the first quarter 21 to 9, Mansfield held the Blue Bombardiers to just five points in the second.   “Our defense was good to start but got great in the second quarter,” …

Marshall's star continues to shine

Hornet football standout named All-State.

State coaches added yet another accolade to the amazing season of Mansfield High football standout Jamel Marshall. The Hornet senior was one of three running backs named to the Massachusetts All-State Football Team as selected by the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association. Marshall had a tremendous senior campaign for the Hornets. He played in 12 of Mansfield's 13 games this year and set the team's single-season rushing record with a total of 1,335 yards, averaging over seven yards per carry. That mark bested the total of 1,239 yards set by former Hornet standout Shawn Doherty during the 2009 season. Marshall also came within one score of the school's single-season touchdown record. He scored 23 touchdowns this past fall, …
