Due to damage to the top ring, the selectmen voted to remove and replace the North Common flag pole.
With damage to parts of the North Common flag pole recently discovered, the Mansfield Selectmen voted this week to remove and replace the pole which is now unable to hang a flag. “There’s no doubt we need to replace the existing pole,” Town Manager Bill Ross said. Removing the pole will cost about $1,100 according to Ross and it will be replaced with a new 80 ft. pole. Since the damage was recently discovered, the U.S. flag that is usually hung from the top of pole has remained off of the pole due to the broken ring that the flag usually hangs from at the top of the structure. The following is a brief summary of what took place at Wednesday's meeting.
The Mansfield Board of Selectmen voted 4-1 with Olivier Kozlowski against to approve the Comcast Center entertainment license. The big issue discussed during the proceedings was the issue of liability and indemnity concerning auxiliary and out-of-town police forces. While there has been only one issue in past years concerning liability when a reserve officer was injured on a detail at the venue in 2004. Town Manager William Ross said that the Cate Springs Well is now up and running. He also added that crack sealing projects on the roads are beginning in the coming weeks. Gazebo gifted to the town.
The North Common, says Mansfield native and philanthropist Joe Gonsalves, "is like an old lady who has lost a lot of weight." In other words, she deserves some attention. "Let's dress her up," Gonsalves told selectmen Wednesday. He has ordered a bandstand much like the one on the South Common, and it is waiting in the wings to be delivered to town and installed on the North Common near the train station. The problem is, selectmen had heard nothing about it until recently, when the gazebo plan was scheduled to come up for site plan approval before the planning board. I haven't seen the meeting that this decision was made in but the article does not state if they considered the cost of repairing the current pole vs replacement? If this was not considered, I would be quite concerned that the town would be spending more than is necessary. It would have been a more informative article if this possibility (one way or the other) was considered.   more ›
