Mansfield voted for Scott Brown and owns more hybrid cars than the state average.
Mansfield is green and red is what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Mansfield, 19.3 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. A UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll shows he is in a strong position to run in 2014.
Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll this week show former Senator Scott Brown is more popular than he was when he lost his re-election bid last fall and is in a strong position to run for Governor in 2014. The independent, nonpartisan poll surveyed 600 Massachusetts registered voters between Saturday, March 2 and Tuesday, March 5. With regard to Brown, the poll – which asked voters for their opinions on whether they would vote for Brown if he runs for governor – showed he has considerable bipartisan support, with 32.7 percent saying they are very likely to vote for him and 26 percent somewhat likely. Senate race will have a Democratic primary, and a Libertarian candidate has now announced. But still no Republican contender.
With local Republicans still scrambling to find someone to run in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State, we do have some other contenders who have jumped into the fray. On Monday, Beverly Libertarian Daniel Fishman announced he would attempt to get on the ballot for the U.S. Senate special election. Fishman garnered more than 16,000 votes in the 6th Congressional District election last fall finishing third behind Congressman John Tierney and Republican candidate Richard Tisei. Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. There are currently no Republican candidates in the race. Markey, who represents the 5th Congressional District, kicked off his campaign in December. With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Governor Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down this month and returning to the private sector. Boston.com is reporting an early salvo has been fired in what could be the Senate special election showdown.
In a radio interview Wednesday morning, U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) jabbed at Democratic Congressman Edward Markey about his residency in Malden, according to a Boston.com report. Brown questioned if Markey still lives in Massachusetts anymore and also told WTKK-FM he often sees members of the Bay State congressional delegation on planes trips home but said "I have never seen Ed on the airplane—ever," according to the report. Markey spokeswoman Giselle Barry responded in an email to Patch, "Scott Brown has not yet announced that he is running for Senate, but he is already launching false, personal attacks from the sidelines. Congressman Stephen Lynch is deciding on whether to run for John Kerry's Senate set.
Massachusetts Congressman Stephen Lynch said he is definitely considering running for John Kerry's senate seat. Lynch was on the Joe Ligotti Show on WTKK Radio Saturday afternoon and said he would be honored to be a Senator. Kerry has been nominated by President Barack Obama to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state and is expected to be confirmed. Gov. Deval Patrick is expected to appoint an interim Senator until a special election can be held. The Boston Herald is reporting Barney Frank is the leading candidate for the interim position. With Senator John Kerry likely to be President Obama’s pick to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, a return to the Senate may be possible for Scott Brown if he chooses to once again run for the office according to a new poll of 500 registered voters from WBUR and MassINC. Despite losing to Senator-Elect Elizabeth Warren in November, the majority of Massachusetts voters still have a favorable view of the Wrentham resident with 58% of those polled viewing him favorably compared to 28 percent who have an unfavorable view. 12 percent were undecided and one percent said they have not heard of Brown. President Barrack Obama is expected to nominate Senator John Kerry for Secretary of State, leading to speculation that Scott Brown will run again.
The Huffington Post is reporting Senator John Kerry (D-Mass) will be President Barrack Obama's choice to be replace Hilary Clinton as Secretary of State. Sources tell ABC's Jake Tapper that Kerry's name will be put up for nomination. If Kerry's nomination is confirmed, that will lead to speculation of another US Senate run by Scott Brown. U.S. Senator Scott Brown will leave office in January. What should he do next?
U.S. Senator Scott Brown, a Republican, was defeated Tuesday by first time candidate Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat. Warren will take office as the state's junior senator in January. She'll replace Brown, who was elected in a special election in January 2010 when he defeated Democrat Martha Coakley. In his concession speech on Tuesday night, Brown told supporters that "defeat is only temporary." As soon as the race was called, analysts began suggesting Brown may run for Massachusetts governor in 2014 or would seek the state's other U.S. Senate seat if Senator John Kerry is named Secretary of State under President Barack Obama in his second term.
