A look back at the highlights as candidates campaign for U.S. Senate.
Two polls last week show double digit leads for U.S. Rep. Edward Markey over his Democratic opponent U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the race for U.S. Senate. Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll last week showed Markey (D-Malden) leads Lynch (D-South Boston) by 29.5 percentage points among potential Democratic primary voters. The poll also shows Markey is leading over all three Republican candidates. Fifty percent of those polled said they would vote for Markey, while 20.5 percent said Lynch, giving Markey a 29.5 percent lead. Twenty-three percent said they were unsure about how they plan to vote. Kerry will replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
With only three dissenting votes, the U.S. Senate has confirmed John Kerry as the new Secretary of State. Kerry will take over for Hillary Clinton, who is leaving her post after four years. The move means Kerry will have to resign as a senator soon paving the way for a special senate election. The primary election is scheduled for April 30 and the general election will be held on June 25. U.S. Congressman Ed Markey, D-MA, has announced he is running for the seat. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA has hinted that he may run. As for an interim senator for Kerry's seat, Gov. Deval Patrick plans to announce his pick on Wednesday, January 30, according to the Boston Herald.

A special election would be held 145 to 160 days after confirmation.
Sen. John Kerry’s confirmation hearing to become the next Secretary of State will take place on Jan. 24, according to Fox25. No opposition is expected to Kerry’s nomination. If he is named to the new post, a special election will be held 145 to 160 days after the confirmation and an interim senator will be named to serve until the election. The front runner to replace Kerry is Congressman Edward Markey. A number of Democratic leaders have already voiced their support of Markey. Congressman Michael Capuano announced earlier this week that he will not run for the seat and Congressman Stephen Lynch is still mulling the possibility. On the Republican side, former Sen. Scott Brown has not announced whether he is going to run.

Former Congressman Barney Frank told the "Morning Joe" Show on MSNBC he is interested in being the interim senator.

One day after watching Joseph Kennedy III take over his former Congressional seat, Frank told the "Morning Joe" show on MSNBC he wants to be the interim senator if John Kerry is confirmed as Secretary of State. “A month ago, or a few weeks ago, I said I wasn’t interested,” said Frank Friday morning on the show. “It was kind of like you’re about to graduate, and they said: ‘You gotta go to summer school.’ But [the fiscal cliff deal] now means that February, March and April are going to be among the most important months in American financial history.” Frank said Friday he told Gov. Massachusetts Congressman Stephen Lynch said he is definitely considering running for John Kerry's senate seat. Lynch was on the Joe Ligotti Show on WTKK Radio Saturday afternoon and said he would be honored to be a Senator. Kerry has been nominated by President Barack Obama to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state and is expected to be confirmed. Gov. President Barrack Obama is expected to nominate Senator John Kerry for Secretary of State, leading to speculation that Scott Brown will run again.
The Huffington Post is reporting Senator John Kerry (D-Mass) will be President Barrack Obama's choice to be replace Hilary Clinton as Secretary of State. Sources tell ABC's Jake Tapper that Kerry's name will be put up for nomination. If Kerry's nomination is confirmed, that will lead to speculation of another US Senate run by Scott Brown. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would be the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014. This information leaks like a sieve. Markey is typical "republican money". He has done zero for us.
