Local Rap Mogul Benzino Shot in Funeral Procession

Benzino, of Mansfield, starred on the reality television series ''Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta."

Music mogul Benzino was shot by his nephew while driving in his mother's funeral procession Saturday in Duxbury, authorities said.

Benzino, 48, of Mansfield, was recovering at South Shore Hospital after he was shot in the arm and back. He gave a bedside interview describing the shooting.

"I'm more embarrassed than anything," he said in the interview, posted by NEHip-Hop.

Police said Benzino was driving a sport utility vehicle on Route 3 in Duxbury when his nephew, Gai Scott, 36, of Randolph, pulled up and fired into the vehicle, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office.

"The Dodge (SUV) had bullet holes ... and a reddish brown substance believed to be blood," the DA's office said in a statement, adding there was a "growing family tension" between Benzino and Scott.

Scott was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder.

Benzino runs Hip-Hop Weekly and starred in the reality television series ‘‘Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta." His real name is Raymond Scott.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz today announced that there was a non-fatal shooting on Route 3 southbound one mile north of exit 10. Gai Scott (DOB: 6/10/77) of Randolph, MA has been charged with one count of Assault with Intent to Murder his uncle, Raymond Scott (DOB: 7/18/65) of Mansfield.

On Saturday, March 29, 2014, at approximately 11:54 a.m., State Police received several 911 calls reporting a shooting on Route 3 southbound. Troop D responded to the scene and observed a red Dodge SUV in the middle of Route 3. The Dodge had bullet holes into the vehicle and a reddish brown substance believed to be blood within the vehicle. There were also shell casings and projectiles at the scene. Troop D personnel secured the scene.

Investigation revealed that Raymond Scott is Gai Scott’s Uncle. There has been growing family tension between Raymond Scott and Gai Scott. Gai Scott was traveling on Route 3 southbound in a funeral procession for a family member. He was heading to a church in Plymouth when the shooting took place. At some point when the cars were side by side, Gai Scott fired several shots into the red Dodge SUV being driven by Raymond Scott. Raymond Scott was hit with gunfire. 

Raymond Scott exited his vehicle and was taken to the Duxbury Police Department by a passerby. He was then transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-fatal gunshot wounds.

Gai Scott was taken into custody by the Plymouth Department. He was transported to the Massachusetts State Police Barracks at Middleboro where he was interviewed by State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. Gai Scott was subsequently charged with Assault with intent to Murder.

The matter is under investigation by the State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. They are being assisted by the Plymouth Police Department, the Duxbury Police Department and members of the State Police Troop D, Crime Scene Services Section, Ballistics Section, Crash Analysis Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Lab. Gai Scott will be arraigned on Monday in the Plymouth District Court.
